Halloween Sugar Cookies

Hello, cookie fiends! I wanted to share something a little more fun and festive today, especially with Halloween right around the corner ????. This is hands down my favorite sugar cookie and by far and away one of the top two favorite treats I make (according to coworkers and friends who’ve helped gobble up my baked goods over the years).

This is a family recipe we bust out for holidays, and I occasionally bust out for any reason at all. My mom has been making these cookies for 30+ years and got the recipe from her grandma (my great-grandma, or Granny as we like to call her). Unfortunately, my Granny passed away a few years ago at the ripe old age of 100, so I can’t do much more digging on where these cookies came from. But, so glad to know Granny’s way around the kitchen has trickled down through so many generations, because she was the kind of person that made everything from scratch and taught me how to appreciate a home cooked meal. Thanks, Granny Goosebump!

As a kid, my mom would make this recipe at Halloween and decorate them in pumpkin shapes with goofy smiles and candy corn eyes.

This year I wanted to cut out some new shapes and decorate a few new festive creatures, particularly these spooky little Frankensteins! I came across these bloodshot candy eyes at the store and had to have them.

Here’s the classic recipe for these adorable Halloween Sugar Cookies:

Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar with an electric mixer until combined, about 1 minute. Add eggs and extracts and beat until well combined, about 2 minutes. Gradually add in dry ingredients, mixing on low until just incorporated. Mix on high for an additional 2 minutes.
  2. Cover the top of the cookie dough tightly with plastic wrap and place bowl of dough in refrigerator. Let chill completely, about 4 hours.
  3. On a floured surface, roll out cookie dough with a rolling pin about 1/8" thick. Flour edges of cookie cutter and cut out cookies from the rolled out dough. Place cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet about 1 inch apart from each other.
  4. Bake for 8 - 10 minutes at 350° F. Cookies are done just as the edges start to brown. Let cookies cool on cookie sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
Recipe Notes
  • If dough is too hard to work with when first taking out of refrigerator, let sit out on counter for 20 minutes to slowly let the dough soften.
  • When cutting out your cookies, save cookie dough scraps by squishing together and placing them in a bowl in the refrigerator to chill. This dough can get warm quickly, and when it does, it gets very sticky and hard to handle.
  • Depending on how thin or dark your cookie sheet, bake cookies at the lower time suggestion of 8 minutes, then add additional baking one minute at a time as needed.
